Fairy Park, Anakie, VIC

Some of us were bundled into the car as kids and driven straight there. Others found it later, like a strange little secret tucked into a hillside. And if you’ve never heard of it? Well, now you have: Fairy Park, Anakie. It’s real. And it’s a gem.
Apparently, it’s Australia’s first theme park, and it’s got that proper OK magic. Opened in 1959, it is still run by the same family (the Meyers) and is proudly kept in its original condition.

If you’ve got a soft spot for slightly-creepy animatronics, you’re in for a treat. The Grimms are all here, lurking in tiny scenes behind glass, along with a model train museum, a playground, a fairytale castle, and a function room that’ll fit 200 of your nearest and weirdest. There’s even one of those old-school telescope viewers at the top of the hill so you can perve on the paddocks—or whatever else is going on out there.

As you wander the winding paths, you’ll notice the soundtrack. It follows you. It’s a bit eerie, a bit hypnotic, and very much part of the experience.
You can pop in for an hour or lose an entire Saturday here. Fairy Park doesn’t mind. It’s been waiting for you.

Anakie is located between Bacchus Marsh and Geelong, approximately 75 km south-west of Melbourne.
